Experiencing God in Nature
One of the best ways to clear your head is to take off for an adult-sized nature walk. Bring your phone and hit a trail. Set an intention to experience God in the nature around you.
When you set an intention to look for God in nature, it can be easy to find. God’s in the details we usually run past. The bee on the flower, the flower that’s blooming where no other life seems to be present, the way all the trees appear to be in perfect horizontal lines.
Begin taking pictures of all of these. It forces you to slow down and really experience it. It doesn’t matter if just delete the pictures later.
Recently I hiked a 14 footer with my 12-year-old daughter. If you don’t know what that is (as I didn’t before that trip), it’s a 14,000-foot mountain. Why the heck I did that, is another story. But during that 8-hour hike, I had moments when my breath was taken away not just from lack of oxygen but from the wonder of God’s creation.
The Bible verse that continually went through my head was Psalm 66:4, about all of creation singing his name.
Shifting Your Perspective
It doesn’t have to be on a mountain that you have this perspective shift. When my children were little, we went on nature walks. During these walks, the kids would take a bucket and fill it up with anything “amazing” from nature. It was usually just leaves and such but what was important was their reverence for nature.
Have you lost your amazement for God in nature? Have you slowed down enough to see God shine through the top of the trees?
Take your camera and a Bible verse below to use a mantra for your next walk. Make it your goal to simply be with God in nature.
Nature Bible Verses
Job 12: 7-10: But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
Psalm 96: 11-12: Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
Psalm 66:4: Everything on earth will worship you; they will sing your praises, shouting your name in glorious songs
Psalm 95: 4-5: In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Job 37: 14-16: stop and consider the wondrous works of God. Do you know how God lays his command upon them and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine? Do you know the balancing of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge
Psalm 19: 1: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Psalm 104: 24-25: O Lord, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom, you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures. Here is the ocean, vast and wide, teeming with life of every kind, both large and small.
